How the festivals began

The Lantern Festival is the night of the first full moon: the closing celebration of the New Year.

It is sometimes called the Chinese Valentine's Day, when young people once met at lantern fairs.

Traditional customs

Sweet rice balls are eaten for togetherness, and the evening is for lanterns and riddles. Many neighbourhoods hold lantern displays.

Festival dates are converted from the lunar calendar and are for reference only. Customs vary a little from place to place. For temple and community events, please follow the organisers' announcements.
